#1084   Large stoneware Fukusuke, a beloved welcoming figure who brings good luck, perennial youth, wealth, and honor. 18"h. C.1920

#1084   Large glazed stoneware Fukusuke, a beloved welcoming figure who brings good luck, perennial youth, wealth, and honor to those who enter his domain. Historically, a particular favorite at teahouses and brothels. But now also a welcoming presence at many shops, restaurants, inns... most everywhere. The stout humorous figure with his huge head, is wearing a sky blue glazed kimono and dark jacket with a "fuku" good luck mon on back; and holding a fan and account book. His serene gaze and oversized ears denote calmness and wisdom. Very good condition, no cracks or chips. The old darkened interior shows the heavy, solid, hand formed construction. The glaze and surface overall a little dirty - old, weathered, very happy and friendly! 18"h x 11"w x 10"d.  C.1920 . . . $450
