#1410  Temple shishi, ceramic, 13"h . . . $300

Buddhist temple guardian dog, koma inu, ceramic, calligraphy, signed, for Japanese interior design, Japanese garden, antiques in Los Angeles

#1410   Seated Buddhist temple guardian dog, a koma inu (generally refers to a more dog-like figure with a horn, rather than the lion-like shishi, although the history is intertwined). Heavy hand-formed figure, combed glaze. Rock solid stance, piercing gaze, mouth closed, chanting "umm". Grassy inscription on bottom. 13"h x 6"w x 8"diam. (Top 2" of tail appears to be an old, expert repair, not very noticeable. The right front leg possibly reattached; if so, also old, expert.)  C.1850 . . . $300
