#1442 A kesho mawashi, the ceremonial apron worn by a sumo wrestler during the opening ceremonies of a tournament.
The colorful, very thick embroidery depicts the famous duel on Gojo Bridge in Kyoto between the fierce warrior Benkei and the young Yoshitsune, who won the battle.
The mounted front area is 27"w x 40"h, including the thick gold braids, knotted "chain mail", and thick tassels at the bottom. The apron's sash is folded behind the mounted front area, extending about 6 feet beyond what is seen from the front.
The piece is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear, and appears to be perhaps about 80 years old (one photo shows the bottom tassel edge folded back, revealing the old material backing).
The piece is currently mounted on a hanger as shown, and displayed in a plexiglass case, 36"w x 48.5"h x 6.5"d . . . $1100
